Chi-Square

Note: Chi-square is used when you have nominal

variables or mixed variables such as nominal and scale or nominal and

ordinal. Cross-tabs is used for ordinal and scale variables.

Review the analysis in the output window.

In the first row of the table under “Chi-Square Tests,” for each variable, look

for “Pearson Chi-Square.” The value, degrees of freedom (df) and

significance (P-value) is listed. The next table for each variable lists

the frequency of occurrence.

Using the “example of how to write about your

results” on page 107 in SPSS for Introductory Statistics, write an

explanation of your results. You do not need to include the X2 or the df values or the last

two sentences about Phi in your write up. Use the directions in Appendix C for

creating an APA formatted table to go along with your write up.

Chi-Square Write Up Example

To investigate whether males and females differ on whether they

took algebra or not, a chi-square statistic was used. Assumptions were

checked and were met. Table 1 shows the Pearson chi-square results and

indicates that males and females do not differ significantly on whether or not

they have taken algebra (N=75, p=.065). Males and

females are both expected, under the null hypothesis, to take algebra in high

school.

Review the analysis in the output window. The

first table provides the descriptive statistics which includes the mean (M),

standard deviation (SD) and total number of responses (N). The second

table is the correlation which includes the Pearson Correlation (r),

Significance (p) and total number of responses (N).

Using the “example of how to write about your

results” on page 128, chapter 8, in SPSS for Introductory Statistics,

write an explanation of your results. Use the directions in Appendix C for

creating an APA formatted table to go along with your write up.

Create a word document for the two analyses,

save the document and title it, “Correlation.” Submit this assignment to the

lab 3 assignment drop box.

Correlation

Write up Example

To investigate if there was a statistically significant

association between father’s level of education and SAT scores, a correlation

was computed. Father’s education was skewed which violated the assumption

of normality. Thus, the Spearman rho statistic was calculated, r =

.22, p = .067. The direction of the correlation was positive but not

statistically significant. This means there is no association between

students who have fathers with high education levels and SAT scores.
